Bali's dive sites operate year-round, but the Indonesian monsoon cycle splits the calendar into two unequal halves. The dry season—April to November—delivers the island's most reliable conditions, with the southeast trade winds flattening the Bali Sea and pushing nutrient-rich water toward sites like Tulamben and Amed. Surface intervals at the USAT Liberty wreck become comfortable, and boat crossings to Nusa Penida's Manta Point lose the bone-jarring chop that defines the wet months. Visibility climbs as river runoff slows, and by May the water column at Menjangan Island can stretch 40 meters into electric blue. The wet season—December through March—is not a blackout period, but it demands flexibility. Northwest monsoon rains swell Bali's rivers, pushing sediment plumes into coastal sites and cutting visibility to 10-15 meters at Padang Bai and Candidasa. Swells on the southern coast often close Nusa Penida and the drift dives at Sanur, forcing operators to shift itineraries to sheltered north-coast sites like Pemuteran. Water temperature drops slightly to 24-26°C as upwellings intensify, which can be a draw for experienced divers chasing mola mola at Crystal Bay, but the trade-off is unpredictable currents and shorter weather windows. The shoulder months—April and November—split the difference. April brings tapering rains and improving visibility, though occasional late-season squalls still scrub afternoon dives. November sees the first wet-season swells building, but mornings remain diveable and crowds thin as the high season closes. Both months offer a cost advantage, as dive operators drop rates and liveaboards run half-full. Arriving between 07:00 and 10:00 during the dry season captures the calmest surface conditions before midday thermal winds pick up, a detail that matters most on exposed sites like Blue Corner and Batu Kelebit where current windows are narrow. Marine life follows its own calendar. Manta rays patrol Nusa Penida's cleaning stations from July through October, drawn by plankton blooms in the Lombok Strait. Mola mola season overlaps from August to October, though sightings are never guaranteed and require deep dives to 18-24 meters where thermoclines meet cleaning wrasses. Macro photographers favor the wet season's cooler water, which brings nudibranchs, frogfish, and ghost pipefishes to muck sites, turning the seasonal disadvantage into a specialization.
